Missouri defensive end, Michael Sam, announced to the world today that he is gay. Projected to be a mid-round pick, Sam will most likely be the NFL’s first openly gay player. It’s a brave move by the young man, who will be met with both acceptance and criticism from fans and players alike. Regardless, this is a historic day for the football world.
Sam was voted the SEC Defensive Player of the Year this past season by the Associated Press, racking up 10.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. Hopefully his decision encourages other gay football players, NCAA and NFL alike, to come out as well.
During a period of revolutionary change in the football world, Michael Sam has chiseled his name as one to remember for many years to come. If anything, he’ll be a pioneer of the new age NFL.
